“We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present.”
“It’s too early to say what the full impact of coronavirus will be on children and young people’s mental health, but the signs are that it will be significant.”

“It is important that we share our experiences with other people. Your story will heal you and it will heal someone else. When you tell your story you free yourself and give other people permission to acknowledge their own story.”
– Iyanla Vanzant
We have always known that stories have the power to enlighten, to empower and to create change, and, as individuals and as a company we are always on a journey to improve and expand our understanding and practice.
In late 2019 (just before the world changed) our creative director, Sean McGrath, travelled to the USA to participate in a facilitator training workshop with NYC based Narrative 4.
Narrative 4 is a global network of educators, students and artists who use art and storytelling to build empathy between students while equipping them to improve their communities and the world. Using their core methodology, the story exchange, they help students understand that their voices, stories, actions and lives matter, and that they have the power to change, rebuild and revolutionise systems (visit N4’s website and find out more here).
“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”
– Carl Gustav Jung
Using Narrative 4’s framework and techniques, AlterEgo’s decade of experience developing and delivering applied theatre projects and workshops, and our associate director, Gemma Paget’s, experience and knowledge as a professional dramatherapist within the NHS, our new story exchange workshop ‘Reconnect’ promises to be a creative, resonant and effective way of helping participants to reconnect after the trauma of the Covid pandemic.
For all of us Covid created a disconnect – a requirement for social and physical distancing that has created an emotional distancing that has impacted on our relationships with friends, family, colleagues and with our selves – with our own emotions. The ‘Reconnect’ story exchange workshop helps people, whether school students or adults in professional settings, to use their courage, compassion and innate human need for connection to reconnect, to bear witness to the range of experiences and emotions that they have had during the pandemic and to bear witness to and empathise with the range of experiences and emotions of others.
Each workshop is designed, in consulatation with the setting, to suit their indivudual needs. For more informoation or a chat about costs or how a ‘Reconnect’ story exchange workshop could work in your school, college or workplace please contact us.
“The power of storytelling is exactly this: to bridge the gaps where everything else has crumbed.”
– Paulo Coelho
